As fate would have it, I conducted an inadvertent N=1 experiment of sorts: In late 2019, a few months before covid blew in, I was admitted for the exact same surgery I experienced in 2006 - same surgery, same surgeon, same hospital. Perhaps, the same operating room for all I know.

Completely different in 2019, on so many levels from 2006 - and definitely not for the better. One thing is for sure: the medical staff in 2019 seemed to be laboring under the burden of too much top-down management. (I recognized the symptoms from having worked 27 years in the corporate world.)

Where things went wrong - and the organizational/management/regulatory changes over the years that contributed to that - I can only guess.
